I’m more than halfway through my Sugar Challenge! And you’d better believe me, at the end of this thing, there is a nice chocolatey mess of Roll With It Chocolate Rocky Road Ice Cream waiting for me- just you wait! 🙂

But since we’re all about improvement and doing our best to be healthy, I thought I would give you some information about finding hidden sugar that has been helpful for me in avoiding sugar. This is important because cutting the amount of sugar in normal foods that you eat will help cut sugar in your overall diet, and give you a little boost in the right direction.

(And keep in mind: I’m discussing added sugars and sugar substitutes- not naturally-occurring sugars in fruits and veggies)

Importance of Finding Hidden Sugar in Your Diet

While I don’t intend to go no-sugar my whole life, I have definitely come to appreciate the concept of choosing what you will fuel your body with. That being said, something I notice that is woefully misunderstood is the effect of diet on our overall health. People will go totally out of their way to workout, but they do nothing to improve their diet. This is incredibly misguided- without the proper fuel, you can’t workout to the best of your potential in the first place, not to mention it’s not helping you lose weight or maintain a good figure.

One of the simplest ways to improve your diet (almost without even THINKING about it) is to reduce the number of processed foods you purchase with added sugars. If you look at any of your processed foods, you will be shocked at how many of them have sugar in them… Added sugar is in about 74% of the packaged foods you can buy at grocery stores! You don’t need all that extra sugar! Save your sugar intake for something awesome like brownies or ice cream, don’t waste it on things that don’t even need added sugar!

If you can decrease your sugar intake, even just a little bit, y
ou will be giving yourself a big leg-up on your overall health. Decreasing sugar intake has proven to lower blood pressure and bad cholesterol, lower risk of heart attack, keep your brain sharp and fight depression, improve skin quality, give you more energy, reduce your risk of cancer, and help improve the way your body looks and feels.

So all that being said, I’m just sayin- If you can cut a little sugar out of your diet, why not??  CHOOSE what you fuel your body with and do something good for yourself for a change! And save that sugar for when you deserve a treat, instead of making it a part of everything you eat. Reducing sugar intake in this seemingly-small way can help improve your overall health and give your body the fuel it needs to function in the best way it can!

 

Sneaky Sugar Culprits:

Here are some sugary processed foods to avoid when grocery shopping! If you really want to buy some of these items, check the ingredients list to find an option without added sugar or compare between products to find the one with the least amount of sugar per serving.

  • Low-fat or fat-free salad dressings or sauces
  • Sweetened beverages, juices, and soda
  • Sweetened cereals
  • Flavored yogurts
  • White bread
  • Candied, dried, or canned fruit
  • Fat-free or “diet” products
  • Smoothies
  • Frozen entrees
  • Crackers
  • Candy
  • Granola/energy bars
  • Tomato/pasta sauce
  • Bakery items (cupcakes, muffins, cookies, cake, etc)

My goal is always to find simple ways to improve my health, and this is one of the best ones out there! It’ll take some practice, and you may have to switch up some of the products you buy at the grocery store, but this small shift will help you get that much closer to improving your health and giving your body the fuel it needs for success!
